Partnership Challenge
Engineered Solution The Wilder Foundation is a nonprofit health and human services organization that supports the greater St. Paul, Minnesota area. Recently, the group discovered that one of their facilities needed a new roof. Since this particular building serves as a home for the elderly, the Wilder Foundation insisted that the reproofing project not cause any inconvenience for the residents. In search of a professional who could meet this challenge, they contacted Jerald Peterson, owner and president of Omni Roofs, Inc. A highly experienced commercial and industrial roofing contractor, Peterson delivered a solution, Tarshield WB. This revolutionary W.P. Hickman product is a water-based coal-tar roof coating that can be used on structures with slopes up to 6:12. The emulsified bitumen product is a rubber-modified, static material, offering strong adhesion, impressive elongation and long-term waterproofing protection. Tarshield WB can be applied to both asphalt and coal tar membranes as a surfacing or flood coat on existing or new built-up roof assemblies. Boasting a well-known reputation as the longest lasting roofing material, coal tar has a stronger molecular structure than asphalt, and provides excellent resistance to water, oxygen degradation, chemicals and ultraviolet radiation. Tarshield WB provides all of these benefits and more. It is a cold-applied, non-asbestos blend that eliminates the hazards that come with hot-applied or high-solvent materials. Tarshield WB is VOC compliant in all jurisdictions. It does not have a strong solvent or tar odor, and there are no hot bitumen fumes. In addition, Tarshield WB can be quickly and easily spray applied, reducing labor costs and construction time. The reroofing project on the four-story Wilder Foundation building was a complete success. Tarshield WB met the unique challenge, and exceeded everyone’s expectations. As Peterson explained, “We put down a four-ply BUR and then instead of hot asphalt or modified we used the Tarshield WB product – sprayed on – then we laid down gravel. We usually get complaints when we use tar, but not this time. The material itself was easy to spray and went down well – there were no plugs-ups in the gun. It is water-based coal tar, so it’s environmentally friendly, and we could clean our equipment and hoses with water. The management at Wilder commented that there were no complaints about odor, noise, dust and dirt. We had a good project, perfect. Overall, we had good luck with Tarshield WB and were pleased with the product. We will use it again!” Features
