Learning the 4 R’s of Roofing is a Money Saving Lesson for Williams Elementary School

Partnership Challenge

  • Eliminate a long-standing leakage problem under a tightly constrained budget

Engineered Solution

“Soaring to Reach our Peak,” announces the Eagle mascot. This is the motto of the L.H. Williams Elementary School. Unfortunately, the peak was at the root of their facility’s problem. From the first day Williams opened, the school’s roof had leaked. Located in the heart of Georgia, Williams is one of almost 30 elementary education buildings maintained under the governance of the Bibb County Board of Education. It is the board’s job to provide a safe, secure, learning environment for children while meeting their fiscal responsibility to the state and federal government and the Macon County taxpayers. Consultants and manufacturers representatives had concluded that the school needed a new roof. With the cost of this project well beyond the budget, the Bibb County Board of Education sought the counsel of Jody Usry, W.P. Hickman’s senior sales representative in the Atlanta district. At the board’s request, Jody conducted an extensive roof survey. Known for his roofing knowledge, practical field experience and outstanding service, Jody concluded that while a new roof might be nice, it was not a necessary course of action.

His evaluation had uncovered a problem that was not from the roof per se, but from the extensive roof to roof and roof to wall neoprene expansion joint systems crisscrossing the building. Instead of tearing off the existing materials, the leakage problem could be arrested and the life of the existing roof could be extended substantially by retrofitting it with a proper expansion joint system.

The existing neoprene expansion joint system had a history of failing at the seams or about every 10’. For the complete restoration of the existing roof, Jody recommended Hickman’s modular expansion joint system in combination with Hickman 505, 101, Polyester Plus, MS-3G Aluminum Shield, Primer, Sealant and ARM

Hickman’s expansion joint system, with internal metal drainage plates requires no sealant and not only lasts for the life the roof, but may last for the life of the building. W.P. Hickman designed its Modular Expansion Joint System to facilitate the horizontal and lateral movement of curbs or roof sections, and handle most thermal expansion and contraction forces. This water tight assembly locks securely to the building and features an internal gutter system that eliminates the need for sealants.

This complete Hickman restoration, with warranty, solved the leakage problems and saved the school money. Hickman’s roofing philosophy, the 4 R’s of Roofing…Repair, Restore, Retrofit and Replace is one lesson that has the Williams Eagles soaring.
